I have another problem with the SATA connector and that is that i can get a normal 2,5"HDD working but when i connect a 2,5" SSD (OCZ 40GB VERTEX 2) it dosen't show at all and this drive works perfectly in any other PC so im getting abit worried here since SSD is the only way to go on a low power platform...

Anyone got similar experiences? or a solution?

    your ssd may require 3.3volts..

you need to check to see if it needs 3.3 volts or 5volts

The voltage delcaration on the SSD says 5 volt, but i even tried with a external powersupply with same result...

'am no SATA expert, but per wiki:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA ... connectors
it looks like the 15pin SATA connector has support for 3 voltages:
    3.3v, 5v and 12v.
Apparently there is no SATA device that uses the 3.3v option. Hence the prevalence of a a 4pin molex to sata power cable - providing only the 5v and 12v.

So if J12 can provide the highest (12v, ~2W for typical SSD's) and be hooked up to the power input of an external SSD "dock" (that has the circuitry to then provide 3.3v, 5v & 12v to the SSD), then the SSD would work as expected.

From my limited understanding it is unclear how the JST connector (only) wired up to J12 can be fed directly to SATA power receptor on SSD, unless the 5v is picked up from another place...

@venkatbo, I have not received my Udoo, so cannot confirm this. However, one of the poster in this thread had stated earlier that J12 is providing 5V not 12V.

I also found the same problem. I can't use it with SSD drive. and confirmed J12 provided 5V.

If the external SATA SSD requires 12v, then one option may be, is to:
    . get 5v from J12 pin 1 (VCC_SW)
    . get 12v from J23 pin 8 (VIN)
and then create a SATA compliant power cable (per SATA wiki) for the the external SATA SSD/HDD. I couldn't find any other jumper that had VIN tap. If 12v is needed, and if you can get an external 12v power supply, you wouldn't need to play with the jumpers - especially if J23 may be needed by the Arduino/DUE shields. I couldn't find any other (jumper) source for VIN from the schematics...

That cable is perfect. I only found one place selling it 'tho and it's on backorder. It's also used-by/bundled-with the Cubieboard.
If anyone stumbles across any other sources, please post it. I'm pretty sure my microsd card is the major bottleneck in boosting the Udoo's responsiveness.

I have now confirmed that it is not a power issue that makes the SSD not work but something else.
I have powered the SSD using a separate powersupply in another computer to verify that it works and then used the same powersupply when connecting it to the UDOO and there it still dosent work so atleast in my case the power is not the issue.

So what could then be the problem ?
    Sata controller ?

I hope its only UBoot or software issue not hardware issue.

Hi. Yes, this looks right: 22 PIN TO 2 PIN + 7 PIN FEMALE TO FEMALE SATA HARD DISK DRIVE ADAPTER CABLE - 20Cm, as illustrated in your attachment.

I searched around but cannot find this? Can you give a URL where this can be found and ordered?

    Thanks.

If it's an older Vertex 2, I'd check for a firmware update for it. They had plenty of compatibility issues out of the box.

I recently added a Samsung SATA SSD to a computer that wouldn't work with one of those 4pin-to-SATA adapters, but worked fine once I rewired the case to use one of the real SATA power connectors. This is a strong hint that it needs the 3.3V supply.

I found (actually bought) a WD Blue mobile 2.5" drive model WD5000LPVT. The power ratings are as follows:

    Power Management
    5VDC ±10% (A, peak)

    Average power requirements (W)
    Read/Write 1.4
    Idle 0.55
    Standby/Sleep 0.13

Question: J12 supplies 5v but is it rated for 1.4W?

If J12 is ok then digikey parts already mentioned can be used to fabricate a connector
    455-1165-ND CONN HOUSING PH 2POS 2MM WHITE
455-1127-1-ND - CONN TERM CRIMP PH 24-30AWG (don't forget these or you'll wondering how to attach the wires to the connector)
WM3623-ND SATA POWER CABLE 1.5M TYPE G/F with the 12v and 12v gnd snipped

    Cheers
    Marc F.

What are you using to power the drive? Did you manage to find a JST -2 connector someplace to make the power cable? Or just powering it off another PSU?
