[Closed] How much memory do we have?

I'm a bit confused, I hope someone can explain things to me. When I do a "free -m" from a command line or use the memory manager in the desktop I get a result telling me that there is a total of 621 megs of memory (RAM).

I was understanding that we have 1gig to play with. Is 379 megs of it being used for something else and is unavailable? Is some of my memory damaged? Is 621 megs all that is installed?

Thanks for any help in getting me to understand this.
