I think the LVDS is the default video output right? Can I change it to HDMI? I have a bootable thumb drive and sd card but I don't know what buttons to press to boot. I assume I can change something in the /boot/config.txt file to make it run HDMI but I'm not sure. Any help would be appreciated, right now its just a paperweight.

Hello heinstein ! it's depend which image you use (seco, udoobuntu, yocto ...). You have many option to choose video output, at u-boot stage (you need a serial debug) and with uEnv.txt. The more easier for you is to edit the uEnv.txt, you can find it in your sd card in /boot/uEnv.txt. In this file set video_output=hdmi
