A number of old threads (thread1, thread2) discussed HDMI resolution changing (or lack of). Short answer if you want to change it them you need to alter the LCD timings in the *-hdmi-* dts files for your desired resolution, so not for the novice. Furthermore going past 720p will have a negative impact as the GPU is only rated for 720p.
