Hello UDOOers, we’re back with some UDOO KEY news!
As you may remember from our latest blog post, the UDOO KEY was successfully backed (if you don’t know what the UDOO KEY is click here to learn more).
We’re back with some great news for the whole community. The UDOO KEYs from the Kickstarter campaign are going to be shipped in April, due to a shipping delay from our suppliers.
We have been requesting constant updates, to make sure everything would ship on time. Everything looks great, except for one component: it’s the IMU.
This component is only on the UDOO KEY PRO. Unfortunately, this specific component seems impossible to come by, and the latest news we received is that if we want to wait for that component, we would start production next year.
We’ve tried *EVERYTHING* in our power to find a solution: we’ve tried all our other contacts, other companies that maybe have some left in stock, we tried scalpers. Nothing worked
Finally, we found an IMU…just not the exact one we were planning on using on our UDOO KEY. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a magnetometer. We ultimately faced a choice: sending your UDOO KEYs next year or mounting on an IMU that doesn’t have a magnetometer.
We have chosen the latter. The IMU model name is MPU-6500. Quoting their thorough datasheet (also available for you here):
“The MPU-6500 is a 6-axis MotionTracking device that combines a 3-axis gyroscope, 3-axis accelerometer,and a Digital Motion Processor™ (DMP) all in a small 3x3x0.9mm package. It also features a 4096-byte FIFO that can lower the traffic on the serial bus interface, and reduce power consumption by allowing the system processor to burst read sensor data and then go into a low-power mode. “
So, we found a solution! It’s a compromise. It’s not perfect, it’s not what we wanted, but we just couldn’t possibly accept to send the UDOO KEYs you’re so eagerly waiting for next year.
